TFY4240 Electromagnetic theory, fall 2015

Course contents:
Electrostatics, method of images, multipoles, electric fields in matter. Magnetostatics and magnetic fields in matter. Electromagnetic force and induction. Maxwell's equations. Conservation laws for charge, energy, momentum and angular momentum. Electromagnetic waves. Transfer matrix theory for thin films. Electromagnetic fields in waveguides. Potential theory and Gauge transformations. Radiation from dipoles and charges in motion. Theory of relativity.

Tuesdays and Fridays 10:15-12:00.

Tutorials:
Tuesdays 12:15-13:00 (starting in week 35).

Semester assignment:
Compulsory assignment which consists of solving a problem numerically by writing and executing a computer program, and writing a suitable report describing your work.

"Introduction to electrodynamics" by D. J. Griffiths (3rd or 4th edition).
